  • A snorkeler inspects a large patch of dead elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) in The Bahamas. Climate change and pollution have lead to coral reefs dying unprecedented rates.

  • A spear fisherman looks for approaching predators. While sharks pose almost no threat to scuba divers having a dying, bloody fish on the end of a spear changes the game. Lionfish cullers must be aware of their surroundings.

  • A lionfish is fed to a shark. It was once thought that you could teach predators like this Caribbean reef shark to eat lionfish, but there is no evidence any efforts have been working. Sharks tend to hunt weak or dying animals and actually help fish populations beneath them thrive.

  • Even after seagrass blades die they are still contributing to the ecosystem, here providing cover for a small blenny.

  • A dead crab, boiled to death, on the shores of Vancouver Island. The victim of a heat wave (a recent study concluded it would have been almost impossible without human-made climate change) that coincided with extremely low tides in the middle of the day. I saw hundreds of sea stars, crabs and even some fish that died from the heat. It's likely billions of animal were killed.

  • A Lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) dies after likely being caught and released by sport fisherman. The hook was removed by removing much of the shark's face and head. Image made in the Florida Keys, USA.

  • In Puerto Rico's southwest, Cabo Rojo, mangrove trees that died during hurricane Maria in 2017 have still not recovered in 2020. Mangroves are the best-known defence in large storms producing large waves. A shoreline is greatly weakened without mangroves.

  • A manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) calf named Sayle had her right flipper entangled in fishing line. After the veterinarian removed the line he took a blood sample to check for possible infections. The vets, scientists and conservationists helped as much as possible, but the young manatee died a couple weeks after this image was made.
